Nasscom unveils first IoT-focused centre

Nasscom (National Association of Software and Service Companies) has launched Country's first centre of excellence focused on Internet of Things (CoE- IoT) at its Startup Warehouse in Bengaluru.
  • It was launched by Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Electronics, IT, Law & Justice
  • CoE- IoT is a joint initiative between the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY), education and research network (ERNET) and the IT industry body
  • It is supported by Accenture, Cisco, Intel, HCL Technologies, Qualcomm, TCS and L&T Technology Services, among others
  • It will function as an enabler of funding, accelerating, and mentoring for start-ups
  • The CoE laboratory, along with the Nasscom 10,000 Startups Warehouse, has the capacity to incubate up to 40 start-ups

Swachh Bharat Mission: Govt plans to clean 10 iconic places
  • Government of India has announced to clean 10 importent sites under swach bharat mission including Taj Mahal, Vaishno Devi temple, Ajmer Sharif, Jagannath temple, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Manikarnika Ghat , Meenakshi and Kamakhya Temple.

    Second anti-drug Working Group meeting of Heads of Drug Control Agencies of BRICS in New Delhi

    • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the second anti-drug Working Group meeting of Heads of Drug Control Agencies of BRICS
    • The meeting is organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
    • Delegates from the member countries, the Ambassadors of the respective countries are attended in the meeting
    • The Indian delegation will be headed by Shri Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Director General, Narcotics Control Bureau
    • In accordance with the ‘eThekwani Declaration‘ adopted during the BRICS summit in March 2013 at Durban, South Africa, it was decided to explore, besides economic issues, various new areas of cooperation among the member States, including drug related issues.
    • It was decided that the heads of anti-drug agencies of the five member countries may meet regularly under the aegis of the BRICS anti-drug working group meeting.
    • In keeping with the spirit of the eThekwani Declaration, the first anti-drug working group meeting of BRICS countries was organized at Moscow, Russia in November, 2015.

    Govt rolls out Krishi Vigyan Kendra portal for monitoring of farm centres
    • Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today launched an online portal designed to monitor functioning of nearly 645 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs),
    • It is known as farm-science centres and It have a mandate to assess agri-technology and demonstrate to farmers application and capacity development, are being set up in rural districts

      South African Writer Lidudumalingani Wins 2016 Caine Prize for African Writing
      • The South African writer and filmmaker, Lidudumalingani Mqombothi, has won the prestigious Caine Prize for his short story, Memories We Lost.
      • The prize, launched in 2000, is awarded annually to an African writer of a short story published in English.
      • The story about two sisters - one of whom is schizophrenic - interrogates some of the traditional beliefs and methods used to tackle the mental illness. 
      • Mqombothi has received the prestigious award at a dinner at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. With this, Lidudumalingani was awarded 10000 Euros and a month at Georgetown University in the US as a writer-in-residence.
      • The Caine Prize, also referred as the African Booker is an annual literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in the English language.
